Does a 5MXM90A9 have to be connected to five indoor units?
No. “Up to five” is the maximum number of indoor units that can be connected; it does not mean that five indoor units must be installed.
The same applies to the 3MXM and 4MXM models. The correct outdoor unit should be selected according to both the number of indoor units and the amount of cooling or heating capacity likely to be required at the same time.
This means that choosing the larger 5MXM90A9 can make sense even when fewer than five indoor units are planned.
Why simultaneous usage matters
A useful way to think about Multi Split sizing is to consider how the building will actually be used.
Example: bedrooms in a guest house
Imagine three air-conditioned guest bedrooms. Although there are only three indoor units, all three rooms may be occupied on the same summer evening. It is therefore quite possible for all three air conditioners to require significant cooling at the same time.
