What Is a Daikin Multi Split Air Conditioning System?
A Daikin Multi Split system uses one outdoor inverter unit to operate air conditioners in several different rooms.
Instead of installing a separate outdoor condenser for every indoor air conditioner, multiple compatible Daikin indoor units connect back to a single outdoor unit.
Daikin Multi Split systems are available for different numbers of rooms:
- 3MXM – connect up to 3 indoor units
- 4MXM – connect up to 4 indoor units
- 5MXM – connect up to 5 indoor units
This makes Multi Split particularly useful where outdoor space is limited or where several individual outdoor units would negatively affect the appearance of the property.
Independent Air Conditioning for Each Room
Each indoor unit in a Daikin Multi Split system can be controlled individually.
That means a bedroom can be set to one temperature while a living room is set to another, and indoor units can be switched on or off independently according to which rooms are being used.
There is one important distinction: all operating indoor units share the same heating or cooling mode. You can set different temperatures in different rooms, but the system cannot cool one room while simultaneously heating another.
For most homes this is rarely an issue, but it is worth understanding when planning a multi-room system.
One Outdoor Unit for Up to Five Rooms
One of the main reasons to choose Multi Split is the much cleaner outdoor installation.
For example, air-conditioning four bedrooms with conventional single-split systems could require four separate outdoor units.
With an appropriately designed Daikin 4MXM Multi Split system, those four indoor units can instead connect to one compatible outdoor unit.
Benefits include:
- Fewer outdoor units on walls, balconies or service areas
- Less exterior visual clutter
- Reduced outdoor space requirements
- Individual temperature control in each room
- One integrated Daikin inverter system serving several spaces
This is particularly useful for apartments, townhouses, modern homes, offices and guest accommodation where exterior space or appearance is important.
Can Different Size Indoor Units Be Used?
Yes. One of the advantages of Daikin Multi Split is that compatible indoor units can have different capacities to suit different rooms.
A typical home might, for example, require smaller-capacity indoor units in bedrooms and a larger unit in an open-plan living area.
The indoor units do not all have to be the same capacity simply because they share one outdoor unit.
Daikin also supports different compatible styles of indoor unit on Multi Split systems, including wall-mounted and selected concealed or ceiling-mounted units.
Daikin Perfera Multi Split
For a premium multi-room installation, we particularly recommend combining a compatible Daikin Multi Split outdoor unit with Daikin Perfera indoor units.
This gives you the clean exterior installation of Multi Split while bringing Perfera’s advanced comfort, filtration and air-purification features into individual rooms.
It is an excellent option for main bedrooms, living areas, home offices and high-end residential installations where both appearance and indoor comfort matter.
Not every indoor unit in a Multi Split installation necessarily needs to be identical, so the system can be designed around the requirements of the individual rooms.
Is Daikin Multi Split Energy Efficient?
Daikin Multi Split systems use inverter technology, allowing the outdoor unit to adjust its output according to the demand from the connected indoor units.
Depending on the outdoor unit, indoor-unit combination and operating conditions, Daikin Multi systems can achieve seasonal energy-efficiency ratings of up to A+++.
Correct system design is important, however. A Multi Split should be sized according to the capacities and likely usage of all the rooms it will serve rather than simply choosing an outdoor unit based on the number of connections available.
Daikin Multi Split vs Separate Air Conditioners
A Multi Split is not automatically the best solution for every property.
Separate single-split systems can make sense when:
- Only one or two rooms require air conditioning
- Outdoor-unit positioning is not a concern
- The rooms may need heating and cooling independently at the same time
A Daikin Multi Split system is particularly attractive when:
- Three or more rooms need air conditioning
- Outdoor space is limited
- Several outdoor condensers would look untidy
- A clean architectural finish is important
- You want one integrated multi-room Daikin solution
The right choice depends on the property layout, number and size of rooms, pipe runs and how the air conditioners are likely to be used.
Can I Run Only One Room at a Time?
Yes.
Although several indoor units are connected to the same Daikin Multi Split outdoor unit, they do not all need to operate whenever the system is switched on.
Individual rooms can be turned on or off as required, allowing you to condition the rooms that are actually being used.
Can a Multi Split System Be Expanded Later?
Depending on the selected outdoor unit, compatible indoor-unit combination and how the original installation has been planned, additional indoor units may be able to be added later up to the outdoor unit’s supported maximum.
If future expansion is likely, it is best to plan for this when the system is first specified so that outdoor-unit capacity, pipe routing and installation requirements can be considered from the start.
Which Daikin Multi Split Do I Need?
The model number tells you the maximum number of indoor units the outdoor unit is designed to support:
Daikin 3MXM: up to 3 indoor units
Daikin 4MXM: up to 4 indoor units
Daikin 5MXM: up to 5 indoor units
But choosing between them involves more than simply counting rooms.
The capacity required in each room, total system demand, room usage, pipe lengths and compatible indoor-unit combinations all need to be considered when specifying the system.
