The correct inverter size depends less on the physical size of the house than on which appliances you want to operate at the same time. 5kW Inverter & Battery Systems
For many homes, a 5kW inverter and battery system is an excellent starting point. It can comfortably support essential circuits and many everyday household loads while providing meaningful backup during power outages.
A typical system might begin with a 5kW Deye or Sunsynk inverter and approximately 5kWh of lithium battery storage, but the inverter does not have to be paired with only 5kWh of batteries. A 5kW inverter can also be combined with 10kWh, 15kWh or more battery capacity where longer backup time is required.
This type of configuration can work extremely well where lighting, refrigeration, electronics, entertainment, office equipment and selected household appliances are backed up, while very high-demand loads such as an electric geyser remain on the grid.
8kW Inverter & Battery Systems
If you want to run substantially more of the home through the inverter — particularly appliances such as electric geysers, stovetops, ovens and tumble dryers — it generally makes sense to start looking towards an 8kW inverter system or larger.
An 8kW inverter provides considerably more capacity for simultaneous household loads and can be paired with larger battery banks. The newer 15–16kWh battery class is particularly attractive at this level because a single large-format battery can provide substantial energy storage without requiring several smaller battery modules.
An 8kW inverter with approximately 15–16kWh of battery storage can therefore provide a very capable home energy system for customers who want to run more of the property from solar and stored energy.
12kW and 16kW Inverter Systems
For larger homes, high simultaneous electrical demand or customers who want to move substantially closer to off-grid living, we would generally start considering 12kW or 16kW inverter systems.
At this level, larger battery banks also become increasingly useful. A system may use one 15–16kWh lithium battery or, where supported by the selected equipment, two batteries providing approximately 30–32kWh of total storage.
These larger inverter systems are also well suited to substantial solar arrays and installations where the objective is to power a much greater proportion of the property’s electrical loads from solar and stored energy rather than relying heavily on the grid.
Inverter Power and Battery Storage Are Different
It is important not to confuse inverter power, measured in kW, with battery energy storage, measured in kWh.
The inverter determines how much power the system can supply at a given moment. The battery bank determines how much stored energy is available and therefore has a major influence on how long the system can continue operating.
For example, a 5kW inverter can be paired with 15kWh of batteries to provide considerably longer backup while still limiting the maximum simultaneous load to the capabilities of the inverter. Likewise, an 8kW, 12kW or 16kW inverter may be paired with 16kWh, 32kWh or greater battery storage depending on the requirements of the installation.
Choosing the Right Lithium Battery Capacity
5kWh lithium batteries remain an important part of the market and are widely used as the building block for smaller and modular backup systems. A single battery can suit essential backup applications, while additional compatible batteries can be added where the battery platform supports parallel expansion.
10kWh-class batteries are also still available and can be appropriate for many installations. However, we are seeing a growing move towards larger-format lithium batteries in the 15kWh to 16kWh class.
These larger batteries provide substantially more storage from a single unit and are especially attractive for larger home energy systems. They can pair particularly well with 8kW, 12kW and 16kW inverter installations.
Where even greater storage is required, two compatible 15–16kWh batteries can create a battery bank of approximately 30–32kWh, providing substantially more stored energy for larger homes and off-grid applications.
What Can an Inverter & Battery System Power?
What a system can run depends on both inverter capacity and battery capacity.
A smaller 5kW system may be designed primarily around lighting, refrigeration, fibre or Wi-Fi, televisions, computers, security systems and selected household appliances. With sufficient battery capacity and solar generation, this can still provide excellent backup and significantly reduce electricity purchased from the grid.
As inverter capacity increases, it becomes practical to include more demanding loads. Customers wanting to run appliances such as electric geysers, ovens, electric stovetops and tumble dryers should generally consider larger inverter systems because several of these appliances operating together can create substantial simultaneous demand.
Actual battery runtime depends entirely on the loads being powered. A large battery supporting a few essential circuits can last considerably longer than the same battery operating multiple high-consumption appliances.
