Cara Water Systems build benchtop reverse osmosis and ultra-filtration water stations — machines that put a 0.0001 micron membrane on your kitchen counter without a plumber, a drilled countertop or a drain line. Their brief, in their own words, is to make clean water easy.

About Cara Water
Cara Water is a water filtration specialist with a South African arm running out of Illovo in Sandton and Ndabeni in Cape Town, and a sister operation in Australia. Benchtop reverse osmosis and ultra-filtration systems are all they make. That narrowness is the point: a company with one product line tends to know it properly, and the support tends to be better for it.
The argument for a benchtop system is a South African one as much as a technical one. Municipal supply here varies street by street and season by season; under-sink reverse osmosis means a plumber and a countertop you are allowed to drill; and a great many of the machines sold online are 110–120 V units built for the North American market that arrive needing a step-down transformer. A Cara station is filled from the tap, plugged into a wall socket, and moves house with you.
The range on EcoHub
Two machines, and the choice between them comes down to one question: cold water, or ultraviolet? The Cara CA3001 dispenses hot and chilled across nine temperature selections from 10 °C to 98 °C, with a 5.5 litre feed tank and a 1.8 litre carry jug. The Cara CA2901 is the cheaper of the two, dispenses hot and ambient rather than chilled, and adds a UV lamp the CA3001 does not have — which makes it the one to look at if your source is a borehole or a tank. Both run the same 0.0001 micron membrane and both remineralise afterwards, so the water keeps a mineral profile and a taste rather than the flatness bare reverse osmosis is known for.
Filters and support
Cartridges are consumables and are sold separately: the F3001 (the PPC and T33 pair) and R3001 (the membrane) for the CA3001, and the F2901 four-in-one for the CA2901. Each machine tracks its own filter life and raises an alert on the display rather than leaving you to remember. Cara South Africa covers the machines for two years against manufacturing faults — worth noting that Cara Australia publishes twelve months on the same hardware, so the local cover is the more generous of the two — and a unit that needs attention is assessed in this country rather than crated to another hemisphere.
What we do not claim on their behalf
Cara’s own material describes the CA2901 as IAPMO tested and NSF certified. We have not been able to verify either listing in the certifiers’ own databases, so we repeat it as Cara’s claim rather than stating it as ours; what we can state is the CE and RoHS marking that appears on the South African listing. Cara publishes no decibel figure and no pure-to-drain ratio for either machine, and we would rather tell you that than quote a number nobody has published. Where Cara’s South African and Australian sites disagree on a specification — and they do, on filtration stages, flow rate and warranty term — we go with the South African distributor, and say so on the product page.
