Sensira is Daikin's value-focused residential range — and "value-focused" is doing honest work in that sentence. It is a properly engineered Japanese inverter air conditioner, not a budget unit with a good badge.

The range has just been replaced. The current generation is the FTXC-E series, and it brings three things the outgoing models did not have.

Smart control is built in. Every FTXC-E unit includes a built-in Daikin network adaptor for the ONECTA app. Previously, Wi-Fi on a Sensira meant buying and fitting a separate dongle. Now your phone is the remote — adjust the house from the car on the way home.

The comfort features have been filled out. Powerful Operation for a fast pull-down when you walk into a hot room. ECONO mode to cap maximum power draw when the rest of the house is under load. A dedicated Sleep Mode that eases the set temperature over the first two hours, so you are not woken at 3am by a room that has gone cold. Plus vertical auto-swing, auto-restart after a power failure, and self-diagnosis that saves a technician time when something does need attention.

The range goes bigger. More on that below — it is the most significant change.

Filtration pairs a Saranet filter with Daikin's titanium apatite deodorising filter: the first captures airborne dust, the second adds deodorising performance, which is what you notice with cooking, pets and tobacco. All models run R32 refrigerant, with substantially lower global warming potential than the R410A in many older splits, and all are reverse-cycle — the same unit heats through winter.

A note worth reading before you buy anywhere

The previous-generation Sensira is still moving through the South African channel, and the two generations look similar enough in a listing that it is easy to buy the older one by accident.

That is not a reason to panic — the old Sensira was a good air conditioner. But you should know which one you are being sold, and you should not be paying current-generation money for it.

Sensira now goes bigger: the new Sensira 71

This is the genuine product news, and it solves a problem we have run into repeatedly.

Until now, a customer with a large lounge or a big open-plan living and dining area would reach the top of the Sensira range and find it just short. At that point the only route was to step out of Sensira entirely.

The new Sensira 71 closes that gap. It pairs the FTXC71EV1F indoor unit with the RXC71EV1 outdoor unit and delivers a manufacturer-rated 24 200 BTU/h (7.10 kW) of cooling — around 14% more than the Sensira 60 — with 8.00 kW of heating.

That matters because "24 000 BTU" gets used loosely in this market. Daikin's specification here is a genuine 24 200 BTU/h rated output, modulating from roughly 7 800 to 24 900 BTU/h as the room's demand changes.

It is also the first Sensira you might actually want to look at. Daikin has redesigned the FTXC-E indoor unit around a modern angular aesthetic — organic and geometric forms drawn from Japanese origami craftsmanship, with a sharp defined crease running through the centre of the unit before flattening out, and the LED indication pared right back. On a wall in a contemporary lounge it reads as a considered object rather than a plastic box.

Despite being the largest unit in the range it still runs down to 31 dBA on Super Low, and moves up to around 720 CFM — enough to actually circulate through a large room rather than conditioning the three metres in front of it.

One honest note, because we would rather you heard it from us: the smaller Sensira models achieve A++ seasonal cooling ratings, while the 71 is rated SEER 5.3 (A) in cooling, with SCOP 4.6 (A++) in a hot climate. That is normal for a large-capacity unit and it remains a strong performer — but if peak efficiency is your priority at this capacity, the Perfera 71 is the better answer, and we will say so.

Daikin Perfera: when comfort and air quality matter more

Perfera is Daikin's premium wall-split range, and the gap between it and Sensira is wider than the price suggests.

Efficiency. Perfera reaches seasonal efficiency values of A+++ in both cooling and heating, against Sensira's A++ ceiling in cooling. In a room that runs long hours through a Highveld summer, that compounds. The Perfera 25 draws roughly 570 W at nominal cooling conditions — low enough to run comfortably on a 5 kW inverter system, which matters more in South Africa than it does in most markets.

Air treatment. This is the clearest separation. Perfera adds Daikin's Flash Streamer technology to the titanium apatite deodorising filter, plus a silver allergen removal and air purifying filter. Flash Streamer uses electrons to trigger chemical reactions with airborne particles, breaking down allergens such as pollen and fungal allergens and removing odours. The practical result is cleaner, fresher indoor air — noticeably so in a pollen-heavy suburb, a home with pets, or a room that never quite loses last night's cooking.

Comfort intelligence. A 2-area motion detection sensor directs airflow away from where people are sitting, avoiding the cold draught on the back of the neck, and drops the unit into an energy-saving setting when the room empties. 3-D airflow combines vertical and horizontal auto-swing to reach the corners of a large room. Heat boost takes the chill off quickly on start-up.

Refinement. Perfera runs down to 19 dBA — quiet enough that in a bedroom you stop noticing it entirely.

Fitting three bedrooms? Sensira is very likely the right call, and the money saved is better spent on good installation. Fitting the room where the family actually lives — and someone in the house reacts to pollen? Perfera earns the difference.

Cooling more than one room? Consider Daikin Multi Split

Air-condition four rooms with conventional splits and you have four condensers positioned around the outside of your house.

A Daikin Multi Split system connects several indoor units to a single outdoor unit instead. Each indoor unit is controlled individually — a bedroom can be off while the living room runs, and different rooms can hold different temperatures.

For many owners the real appeal is not efficiency. It is air-conditioning several rooms without surrounding the building with condensers: cleaner exterior walls, less outdoor noise, and fewer constraints on courtyards, balconies and entertainment areas.

All three reach seasonal efficiency values up to A+++ in cooling and A++ in heating, and use swing compressors — quieter than the alternative, which matters when the outdoor unit sits near a bedroom window or a neighbour's boundary wall.

"Up to five" is a maximum, not a requirement

This is the most common misunderstanding, and it costs people money in both directions.

There is no rule that three rooms means a 3MXM. That number is the maximum number of indoor connections the outdoor unit accepts. The right choice depends just as much on how much cooling is likely to be demanded at the same time.

Take three guest bedrooms. Only three indoor units — but on a hot February evening all three may be occupied and calling for cooling at once. Available outdoor capacity under simultaneous load is what matters, and the larger outdoor unit can be correct even though the smaller one would physically accept three connections.

Now take a family home. A large indoor unit serves the open-plan living area through the afternoon; smaller units serve bedrooms overnight. Considerable installed indoor capacity, but the peaks never coincide. That is load diversity — and it means the combined capacity of all the indoor units is not what the outdoor unit has to deliver at once.

Same room count, opposite answers. Which is exactly why Multi Split rewards being specified properly rather than assembled from a parts list.

Where Multi Split earns its place

• Premium residences — several rooms conditioned, exterior walls and entertainment areas left uncluttered
• Guest houses and B&Bs — individual comfort in every room, far fewer condensers around guest areas
• Boutique hotels — quiet operation, individual room control, and a building that still looks like the building
• Apartments and townhouses — where balcony space or permitted outdoor-unit positions are limited
• Renovations and architecturally sensitive homes — minimum visual impact from mechanical equipment

One honest limitation: indoor units on the same Multi Split system operate within the same overall mode. Each can be set to its own temperature or switched off, but one room cannot actively heat while another on the same outdoor unit is cooling.

Getting the size right

Floor area is a starting point, not an answer.

A 30 m² bedroom on the south side of a well-insulated house is a different problem to a 30 m² lounge with a west-facing sliding door, a 3.5 m ceiling and an open pass-through to the kitchen. Same square metres, materially different heat load.

What actually determines capacity: glazing area and orientation, ceiling height, insulation, sun exposure, occupancy and other heat sources, and whether the room opens into adjoining spaces.

Undersize it and the unit runs flat out on the hottest days without ever getting there. Oversize it — the more common and more expensive mistake — and it short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly, and you have paid for capacity you cannot use.
