FORTY LITRES A DAY
Forty litres a day for the whole damp floor
A compact 10- or 12-litre dehumidifier is the right size for a bedroom in a reasonably dry house. It is the wrong size for a ground floor in a Cape winter, a basement storeroom or a cottage near the sea, where walls, floors and furniture keep releasing moisture as fast as a small unit can pull it out. The GMC GMCDHW40 is rated at 40 litres a day, driven by a rotary compressor drawing 610 W, and GMC sizes it for rooms of 35 to 45 m².
That 40-litre figure is measured at 30 °C and 80% relative humidity, the standard test point for this class, and it is a ceiling rather than a daily promise. In a cool, moderately damp room the unit extracts less, as every compressor dehumidifier does. What the extra capacity buys is headroom: the GMC brings a room down to its target quickly, then cycles on and off instead of running flat out all day.
Condensation on the windows, mould on the ceiling above the shower, a musty smell in the cupboards and books curling on the shelf all come from the same thing: air holding more water than the room can handle. Bring the relative humidity down to between 40% and 60% and those problems stop at their source.

Built for the rooms a 10- or 12-litre dehumidifier runs flat out in, and still cannot keep dry.

SMART CONTROL
Set the humidity you want and it holds it there
The digital humidistat reads the room and holds it at the level you choose, from 30% to 80% in 5% steps. In Intelligent mode the compressor runs until the room reaches that target, rests, and starts again when the humidity climbs, so the unit never works harder than the room needs. Colour-coded indicator lights show at a glance whether the air is dry, comfortable or damp.
Every function sits on the touch panel on top: humidity, fan speed (high or low), louver swing, a timer from 1 to 24 hours, mode and child lock. The same controls are in the Tuya Smart Life app over Wi-Fi, so you can check a holiday house or a storeroom from your phone, and GMC states that the unit works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
The louver swings up and down to push dry air across the room rather than only in front of the unit, and the display shows the room temperature alongside the humidity, so you can see what the dehumidifier is working with.
WHERE IT EARNS ITS PLACE
Bathrooms, basements, living rooms and the washing
The GMC is at its best where damp builds fastest: a bathroom without an extractor fan, a ground-floor bedroom against a damp wall, a basement or garage storeroom, a holiday house that stands closed for weeks. Run it for a day in a room that smells musty and the difference is in the air before it shows on the walls.
Laundry mode switches off the humidity control and runs the compressor continuously, so washing on an indoor rack dries in a closed room instead of steaming up the house. On a wet winter week it takes over much of the tumble dryer’s work, drawing 610 W, a fraction of what most tumble dryers use.
Greenhouses and seedling rooms, home gyms, small offices and archive cupboards suit it too. For a commercial space larger than about 45 m², or a building drying out after a flood, a commercial unit is the better tool, and we compare those below.

DRAINAGE
Empty the tank, or never empty it at all
Water collects in a removable 5-litre tank with a window that shows the level. When the tank is full the compressor stops, the full-tank light comes on and the GMC waits for you to empty it, so it cannot overflow onto the floor.
At up to 40 litres a day a 5-litre tank fills quickly in a very damp room, which is why the continuous drain is worth setting up. Connect the drain hose supplied in the box to the outlet, lead it to a floor drain, a shower or an outside gully, and the GMC runs day and night without being emptied. It drains by gravity, so the hose must fall the whole way; GMC’s manual asks for a slope of more than 20 degrees.
If the hose runs outside, bring it in on nights below 1 °C, since water freezing in the hose can back up into the unit.
COOL ROOMS, QUIET NIGHTS
Keeps working through a cold winter and settles down at night
Damp and cold go together, and the coil of a compressor dehumidifier can ice up in a cool room. The GMC handles this with automatic defrost: between 5 °C and 16 °C it pauses at intervals to clear the coil, then carries on. It is rated to work in rooms from 5 °C to 38 °C, which covers an unheated South African house through winter.
GMC rates it at under 47 dB(A). Like every compressor unit it has a steady hum, and Sleep mode keeps that as low as it goes: the display lights switch off and the fan holds on its low speed, so it can run in a bedroom overnight.
At 15.5 kg it is a substantial machine, but it rolls on four castor wheels and has carry handles, so moving it from the bathroom to the laundry to the storeroom takes seconds. Leave 30 cm clear on every side so air can move freely around it.

SOUTH AFRICAN SUPPLY
Made for South African power, backed in South Africa
The GMCDHW40 is supplied by GMC Aircon, a South African air-treatment company, as a 220–240 V, 50 Hz model with a South African plug. That matters: dehumidifiers imported on demand can arrive as 110–120 V units built for other markets, needing a converter to run here and carrying no local warranty.
Auto Restart brings the dehumidifier back on with your settings after a power cut, so load-shedding or a tripped breaker does not leave a closed room to turn damp while you are away. Overload protection guards the compressor.
GMC covers the unit for two years, with support from its team in Centurion, and we handle any warranty claim with GMC on your behalf.

How the GMC 40L sits against the alternatives
Against the MeacoDry Arete Two 25L, the GMC is rated to remove more water a day and costs considerably less, which makes it the stronger choice when the problem is simply a large, very damp room. The Meaco earns its premium in other ways: it is an H13 HEPA air purifier as well as a dehumidifier, and it runs at a quieter 40 dB. If allergies are part of the reason you are buying, the Meaco does two jobs; if the problem is water, the GMC takes out more of it.
The MeacoDry Arete Two 12L suits a single bedroom or a small flat, is more compact, and carries the same HEPA purification. In a whole ground floor or a basement, though, a 12-litre unit will run constantly and still fall behind; that is the space the GMC is built for.
For a warehouse, a commercial building, anything much above 45 m² or a building drying out after a flood, the Solenco 85L Heavy Duty is the right tool, with a rotomoulded body and more than twice the extraction. The GMC is a home and small-office machine, and we would rather point you to the bigger unit than sell you one that is out of its depth.
Questions we are asked about the GMC 40L
Up to 40 litres at 30 °C and 80% relative humidity, the standard rating point for this class. In a cooler or less humid room it removes less, as every compressor dehumidifier does, so the figure is best used to compare units rated at the same conditions.
GMC’s manual sizes it for 35 to 45 m², with a minimum room size of 5 m². To dry more than the room it stands in, leave the doors between rooms open.
Yes, from 5 °C upward. Between 5 °C and 16 °C it defrosts its coil automatically at intervals and then carries on. Below 5 °C it is outside its operating range.
Yes. Fit the drain hose supplied in the box and lead it to a floor drain, shower or outside gully. It drains by gravity, with no pump, so the hose must fall all the way; GMC asks for a slope of more than 20 degrees. Bring the hose indoors when it drops below 1 °C outside.
The Tuya Smart Life app over Wi-Fi. When the Wi-Fi light flashes, choose Add Device, then Small Home Appliances, then Dehumidifier. GMC states it also works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
GMC rates it at under 47 dB(A). Sleep mode switches off the display lights and holds the fan on low, so it can run overnight in a bedroom.
It has a washable air filter that keeps dust off the coil, and keeping humidity down discourages mould and dust mites, but it has no HEPA filter and is not an air purifier. For both in one unit, look at the MeacoDry Arete Two range; for purification on its own, the GMC Large H13 HEPA Air Purifier.
No. GMC advises against it: the vinegar used in drying biltong corrodes the internal components, and damage from a corrosive environment is not covered by the warranty. If you are unsure about your space, ask us before you buy.
Clean the air filter every two weeks in warm water of about 40 °C with a mild detergent, let it dry and refit it; never run the unit without it. Rinse the tank when you empty it, and wipe the housing with a soft, dry cloth rather than solvents.
Auto Restart switches it back on with your previous settings once the power returns, so there is nothing to reset.
GMC Aircon covers the GMCDHW40 for two years. A claim needs proof of purchase, which is your EcoHub invoice, and we log and follow up the claim with GMC on your behalf.
